Enjoy Summer With Marthas Vineyard Fishing Charters

By Alyce Powell

When summer reaches the East Coast, many Americans from the region decide to take a break from life in the city. Some prefer simple country life and head for areas like the Catskills or a cabin by one of the region's many lakes. Others want sun and surf, so they flock to coastal destinations. Here they can sunbathe, go sailing or simply enjoy some relaxation in their summer homes but some make use of Marthas Vineyard fishing charters to have an even better vacation.

The island of Marthas Vineyard is located in Massachusetts. It covers around 100 square miles, so it's the third largest island on the American East. Located just to the north is Cape Cod. The island has about 16,500 permanent inhabitants but is also a destination of choice for tourists, especially affluent ones.

The island has a moderate climate. Winter temperatures tend to be a little higher than on the mainland but because of the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, summers tend to be cooler. Summer weather is so pleasant that the island's population swells to around 100,000 people during the warmer months. Rain can fall throughout the year.

Originally the people who lived here were the Wampanoag. They called their island home Noepe. In 1642 the first English settlers arrived and over time there were fishing communities dotted around the coastline. As demand for whale blubber and oil rose, a whaling station was established here too.

The Vineyard has since established itself as a prime vacation spot. The rich, famous and powerful often own summer homes here. The most famous of its inhabitants are probably the Kennedy clan but many artists also come here to hide from the spotlight. Actor John Belushi loved it so much that he was buried on the island, in the town of Chilmark. Some of the more recent vacationers included the Clintons and the Obamas.

The celebrities who frequent the East Coast island are responsible for one of the destination's main attractions, which is simply to try and spot famous people or admiring their homes. The beaches are another good reason to come here and The Vineyard is also home to a small wine industry. Several film festivals are held throughout the year too and the kids will love the Flying Horses Carousel, the oldest in the United States and located in Oak Bluffs.

There is no bridge connecting the island to the mainland. However, it's still easy to get here. Several ferries service transport people across the sound from coastal towns in Massachusetts. There is also an airport on the island. Those visitors who don't own private jets can take a commercial flight from Boston, New York, Providence, Philadelphia and even Washington DC, although many of these flights are available only in summer.

If adventure is your middle name, you may want to head to the deep waters with a rod and reel. This is after all the place where the movie 'Jaws' was shot. Some people still survive from fishing and will be happy to take you out on their boats. Marthas Vineyard fishing charters can be found in most of the harbors and will help you have a wonderful summer.
